Fraser Island, QLD:Fraser Island is strictly four-wheel-driving territory. Spanning 125 km in length and 30 km in width, it is a unique natural environment and the largest sand island in the world. Seventy-Five Mile Beach is an actual "highway" that runs up the surf side of the island and there are sand tracks crossing the island linking lakes and rainforests. Road rules apply. There is an abundance of wildlife throughout the island, where you can expect to see many species of birds, wallabies, possums, flying foxes, echidnas and dingos. Surrounding the island, you may see dolphins, turtles and humpback whales (in season). Camping and accommodation are available. All year, although best from April - October. School holidays are extremely busy.
Cape York, QLD:Cape York is undoubtedly a four-wheel-driver's ultimate destination. Because of Cape York's location travel is restricted to the dry season (May-October). Here you will be put to the test! There's always bulldust, corrugations, deep river crossings, saltwater crocodiles, long distances between supplies and emergency help and always unpredictable road conditions. Therefore, a trip to Cape York must be carefully planned. You need to prepare for the worst and carry more than enough equipment and recovery gear to handle repairs and maintenance in the bush.
Simpson Desert, NSW, SA, QLD, NT:The Simpson Desert is the driest region of Australia. It is a dunal desert - a sea of parallel red sand ridges around 300-500 kilometres long covering a total area of 170,000 square kilometres. The Simpson Desert can be crossed from West - East or East - West, depending on your preference. Tracks are defined only by the ruts and wheel marks in the sand - there is no grading or grooming of the track at any point of the trek. The best time to visit is April-October.
