Melbourne & Surrounds

Population: 3 800 000

Major Airports: Melbourne International, Avalon

Transport: The public transport in Melbourne can get you travelling by bus, ferry, tram or train to almost any part of the city. Taxi’s are also everywhere. Melbourne's Tullamarine airport is 22km from the city. Taxi or the Skybus are the most convenient methods of getting into the city from the airport.

When To Go: Melbourne's climate is often unpredictable and liable to extremes – often in the same day! In summer, the temperature averages 14°C and 26°C, while in winter the average is a cooler 6°C to 13°C. Melbourne's soggy reputation outstrips the reality - it receives only half the average rainfall of Sydney or Brisbane.

Overview
As a certified PADI Open Water Diver, you join the most widely recognised and respected dive rating in the world. Victorian divers are fortunate to experience some of Australia's best temperate water diving from various reef dives to spectacular shipwrecks.

Description
This is a part-time course that is run over 2 weekends and qualifies you to become a PADI Open Water Diver. We also offer a full-time course as a separate product on request.

The Open Water Diver course is run over 4 days:

Day 1 - You will spend today in the classroom going over the knowledge reviews that you completed at home, and learning the basic concepts you need to keep you safe when scuba diving. Your instructor will make sure you have the required level of knowledge in order to continue with your training.

Day 2 - It's time to put on the scuba gear! Today you'll head to the pool and be introduced to breathing underwater. You'll learn the skills that are necessary to keep you safe on your course ocean dives and during your own diving.

Day 3 - It's time to say g'day to those seahorses! You will do two dives today under Rye Pier. It's a perfect training environment about 5m deep and has some spectacular life living around its pylons.

Day 4 - Today you will do a boat dive from Portsea. The sites is usually Portsea Hole or Pope's Eye, though may change depending on conditions. You'll go a little deeper today, which will prepare you for doing your own diving after the course. After your boat dive you will do another pier dive, so keep a lookout for the weedy seadragons.

That's it! After day 4 you will be certified to dive to 18m with a buddy, anywhere in the world! And because you learned to dive in Victoria you'll have experienced thicker wetsuits and more weight, making you a better diver.

How long will it take? This is a part-time weekend course that will take two weekends. PADI programs are performance based. You proceed as you demonstrate mastery of the course skills.

What do I need to start? Virtually anyone who is in good health, reasonably fit, and comfortable in the water can earn a PADI Open Water Diver certification.

What will I need? Bring comfortable swimmers and your sense of adventure!

Where can I go from here? If you want to continue your training from here, it's time to go on to the PADI Advanced Open Water Course where you will be given an introduction to navigation, deep and other types of diving.

Open Water Diver sessions are held regularly throughout the year. Our Preferred Operator has store locations in Rye, Rowville, Glen Iris and Narre Warren. Please indicate your preferred location during the checkout process under "Additional Information".
